The impact of nativism and non-nativism on EFL student teachers' identity construction

Abstract


The spread of English as a foreign language in the world has given way to the discussion of native and non-native English teachers' efficacy. Educators has been examining and evaluating this issue from several perspectives. While a group of applied linguists are questioning the non-native teachers' presence and competence, some others support the presence of non-native teachers believing that their competence is enough to perform teaching in foreign language classes. This study intends to examine three novice  EFL (English as a foreign language) teachers’ own perceptions and views on their non-nativeness regarding the aspects of image, competence, and impact. The results displayed that they have varying thoughts and feelings related to their competence.
