Abstract

The "communication" concept, which has been started with the birth of humanity, has always found new media and ways out for itself up till today. Besides the all technological developments it benefits, “communication”expressed itself in all areas where people live. It met with the receiver not only verbally, but also visually.

Today “communication” can take place in fields of life, besides traditional channels like written and visual media.Personal / corporate imagesare reinforced by the message given in the space;with space-human interaction, an unspoken communication is established. It is possible for people or corporations to use the space as a communication tool by creating differentiated, thematic habitats. The perceptibility of space by the people who interact with, depends on the strength of the graphic elements designed. These elements are based on a common point of negotiation. With a correctly identified theme and strong visual imagery, it is possible to provide space-human interaction.

The sense of integrity, which is used in spatial imagery design and provided by all elements, will be guiding the perception of people who interacts with the space. The visual elements which are designed for private spaces, strengthen the self expression and the sense of belonging of a person. These elements and their applications in the public spaces are both important for giving the message and directing people. Especially, the recent thematic and guiding arrangements made in public spaces are good examples for this issue.

The cooperation of graphic design with space to give message creates a new medium for "communication": A space-human interaction, which is provided by a theme fictionalised only with the visual elements.Human being, who shapes and expressesherself or himself as she or he wants, presents the same variety of expression and freedom by the thematic designs she or he created in spaces.

In this study, the purpose and process of forming the spatial image have been analysed. The effects of "message", which is formed at the end of this process, on personal and social communication, and the impact of utilizationof space by humans as a medium for their communication are evaluated.
