A “3S” Obesity Education Program among Married Women in Suburban Area of Kelantan: An Assessment on KAP score and Psycho-social aspect

Abstract


Problem statement: Obesity is a preventable disease and it affects all level of community. The aim of the study is to determine the effectiveness of the 3S (Simple, Sustainable and Suitability) Education Program by assessing the KAP scores.

Methods: It was a community intervention study involving obese and overweight married women. It was conducted in one of the suburban area of Kelantan, Malaysia. Prior to start of the program, few assessment were measured including BMI level, waist hip ratio, KAP scores using validated questionnaire, level of perception of body image and the need assessment on interactive 3S Education program. Post assessment was done 4 weeks after completing the program. SPSS version 21.0 was used for data analysis.

Results: A hundred of participants who fulfill the study criteria were involved. Majority of them had poor perception on their body image, but they are willing to participate in the program. The difference in mean scores of each KAP domain were statistically significant respectively [Knowledge score: 24.21, 26.80, p = 0.005, Attitude score: 5.70, 8.30, p <0.001, Practice score: 6.62, 9.32, p=0.002]. All domains show improvement with an increment of mean score for more than 10%.

Conclusion and recommendation: The interactive 3S Education Program helps in empowering women with knowledge and skills. The program is recommended to be used by women as they play major role in providing healthy diet to the family so that the prevalence of obesity can be reduced in community
